Measure G: A Mandate for Aggressive Action

In November 2006, Berkeley voters issued a call to action on greenhouse gas emissions. The mandate was simple, but bold – reduce our entire community’s greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by the year 2050. The measure directs the City to develop a Climate Action Plan to reach that target, as well as interim targets, by year-end 2007.

As a first step toward developing the Climate Action Plan, the City released an interim report, “Climate Action in the City of Berkeley: A Framework Report for Community Review and Engagement” in June 2007. The framework report is not the Climate Action Plan but, rather, a first step toward the development of that plan. Its purpose is to invite community participation in designing Berkeley’s blueprint for local climate action.

It is up to all of us to work together as a community to decide which specific strategies should be included in Berkeley’s Climate Action Plan. We invite you to review and comment on the “framework report” now. Your comments and questions will guide the development of the Climate Action Plan. The draft Climate Action Plan itself is to be posted on this website for public review in October. Berkeley City Council will review and comment on the Climate Action Plan in December.
